Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3. Propellor Time. Sartorial Records FIT047CD, 2010. (on CD)
Well-produced and pleasant. It’s a huge improvement from the Venus 3’s last mess of an album (Goodnight Oslo), but it’s not as interesting as their first (Olé Tarantula). All three albums rank pretty low on the quirky scale compared to most of Hitchcock’s music, and this one is the least weird yet. I don’t think he’s put out an album this Generally Accessible since he was recording for A&M, back in the early 90s. It’s high quality music, but very dull – kind of like an R.E.M. album (incidentally, the “Venus 3” are all from that band).
