album: Propellor Time

Robyn Hitchcock & the Venus 3. Propellor Time. Sartorial Records FIT047CD, 2010. (on CD)

Well-produced and pleasant. It’s a huge improvement from the Venus 3’s last mess of an album (Goodnight Oslo), but it’s not as interesting as their first (OlĂ© Tarantula). All three albums rank pretty low on the quirky scale compared to most of Hitchcock’s music, and this one is the least weird yet. I don’t think he’s put out an album this Generally Accessible since he was recording for A&M, back in the early 90s. It’s high quality music, but very dull – kind of like an R.E.M. album (incidentally, the “Venus 3” are all from that band).

7/10 (Good).

You put it a lot better than I could have. There’s enough for me to enjoy musically but I don’t think this will be on regular rotation.

Then again, the music video for Ordinary Millionaire is awesome. Go to Youtube to watch it if you haven’t already.
