Blues Brothers. Briefcase Full of Blues. Atlantic 82788-2, originally released 1978. (on CD, second-hand)
It’s a fascinating anomaly (I mean, why do the Blues Brothers exist?), and the fact that it stays entirely in character is amusing. But I expected the music to be at least half as good as the tracks they would record for the movie a few years later. No luck. It’s live, very loose and sloppy (which seems like a waste of a band that would later prove to be very tight). And Belushi constantly sounds like he’s trying really hard to sell something that he doesn’t expect anyone to buy. You can smell the fear.
