album: The Golden Hits of Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs

Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs with the Foggy Mountain Boys/Allen Shelton. The Golden Hits of Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs. Gusto PO 297, 1977. (on vinyl, from a thrift store)

I have no idea what this record is. My best guess is that a “value” label somehow got the rights to a handful of Flatt & Scruggs recordings, dumped them on an album along with some stuff by a similar but unrelated artist (Allen Shelton), and tried their best to make it look like an official Greatest Hits compilation. But who knows. I’m not even 100% sure that anything on the album is played by Flatt & Scruggs. Whatever it is, the music is all fantastic, which only makes the confusion that much more frustrating.

7/10 (Good).

[update: It is a real record company after all, but if anything that makes this record more confusing.]
